Bluestone Path & Layered Planting
A garden path that does the work of a hallway
The approach
A garden is often experienced as a route before it is experienced as a view. This one is organised around a single bluestone path that runs from the house to the lawn, wide enough to walk two abreast and set flush so there is no lip to catch a mower or a wheelbarrow.
Materials
Sawn bluestone in a random-length pattern, laid on a compacted base with falls set away from the building. Compacted gravel runs alongside it — a cheaper surface than stone, and a deliberate one: it drains freely, suits the informality of the beds, and gives the paving a clean edge to finish against.
Planting
A feature tree anchors the gravel bed and carries the seasonal colour. Behind it, clipped evergreen mass holds the structure through winter, so the garden still reads as designed in the months when nothing is flowering.
