The approach
Inner-city courtyards have no room for error. Every square metre is visible from inside the house, so the boundary, the paving and the planting all have to work as one composition rather than three separate jobs.
Boundary & screening
Dark vertical fencing forms the backdrop. Painting a boundary out in a recessive colour makes a small space read as larger, and gives the foliage in front of it something to stand against.
Planting
Broad-leaved foliage close to the glass, finer texture behind. The planting is layered against the fence rather than dotted around the perimeter, so the garden has depth from the one viewpoint that matters — the one from inside.
