The surface that has to be safe when it's wet
The approach
A pool surround has to satisfy two things that pull against each other: it should look like the rest of the garden, and it has to be safe underfoot when it is wet and someone is walking on it barefoot.
Materials
A surface specified for slip resistance and for how it holds heat — a stone that is beautiful and unwalkable at 2pm in January is the wrong stone. Falls are set so water leaves the paving rather than pooling at the coping.
Surrounds
Dark screening and planters frame the pool without crowding it, and keep the planting clear of the water so maintenance stays simple. Poolside planting is chosen as much for what it does not drop as for how it looks.
